Strengthening Succession Conversations: Wight Rural Hub’s First Partner Event with CLA & Paris Smith
September 18, 2025

On a crisp September evening at Bluebells Cafe at Briddlesford Farm, Wight Rural Hub proudly hosted its first collaborative event with the Country Land and Business Association (CLA) and legal experts Paris Smith, focusing on one of the most pressing topics in agriculture today: succession planning.

This landmark gathering brought together Island farmers, landowners and advisors to explore the complexities of inheritance, tax and future-proofing family farms. With the backdrop of Briddleford’s working dairy farm, the event offered a grounded and practical setting for open dialogue and expert-led presentations.

Why Succession Matters Now More Than Ever

The CLA and Paris Smith delivered insightful presentations on Inheritance Tax (IHT), Agricultural Property Relief (APR), and the importance of early succession planning. Attendees were encouraged to consider not just legal and financial implications, but also the emotional and relational dynamics that come with passing on a family business.

The session highlighted:

  • The risks of delaying succession conversations
  • How recent policy changes may affect APR eligibility
  • The value of involving all generations in planning discussions

Community, Collaboration & Farmer Wellbeing

Wight Rural Hub thanked CLA and Paris Smith for their partnership, noting that shared gatherings like this strengthen local collaboration without relying on government funding. Estee Phillimore, Wight Rural Hub Manager and Catchment Sensitive Farming IW Coordinator, spoke to the audience about Wight Rural Hub’s mission: to support Island farmers and land managers through local events, practical resources and connections with trusted advisors. She emphasised Wight Rural Hub’s role in translating national agricultural policy into tangible local opportunities, especially in times of change.

The event wasn’t just about presentations—it was about building community resilience. Attendees enjoyed refreshments before and after the presentation and a delicious chilli supper made with Briddlesford beef. This relaxed setting allowed time for networking, reflection and a focus on farmer wellbeing, which remains a core priority for WRH.

Attendees were invited to join WRH’s monthly newsletter, which summarises updates from Defra, RPA and other agencies into one clear email—saving farmers time and helping them stay informed.
